About Us
Sibling Kinship is a not for profit service offering virtual counselling and online groups with siblings living in kinship care; where an elder sibling takes on the parenting responsibilities for younger dependent siblings. These sibling parenting arrangements often occur in emergency situations, either informally arranged within the family or formally arranged by statutory services.
Sibling kinship households face multiple social disadvantages. Elder carer siblings are younger in age, often without prior parenting experience and some report age-discrimination from agencies tailored to older kinship groups, suggesting they "were not taken seriously, but on account of being younger". Sibling carers tend to see their caring role as a moral obligation whilst their own aspirations suffered such as studying, employment and personal relationships. Sibling kinship households face higher levels of poverty and housing insecurities in comparison to others of similar age, whilst the emotional and practical help offered to support these arrangements is inconsistent and sparse.
